Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. Cross Concept, a compact electric SUV designed to represent the brand’s next step in making electric vehicles more accessible and practical for everyday use. Set to debut at the IAA Mobility show in Munich in September 2025, the ID. Cross Concept stands out as a fresh interpretation of Volkswagen’s electric ambitions, combining affordability, comfort, and a modern design language that balances tradition with innovation.

Built on the MEB Plus platform, Volkswagen’s modular electric vehicle architecture, the ID. Cross Concept brings a front-wheel-drive electric motor rated at 155 kW delivering 208 horsepower for urban commuting and occasional long trips. The vehicle promises a range of around 260 miles on the WLTP cycle, a figure that offers competitive usability for a compact SUV. The German automotive giant aims to price the production version of the ID. Cross between $32,780 to $35,121, targeting cost-conscious consumers who want to shift away from fossil-fuel-powered SUVs without compromising space or comfort.

Designer: Volkswagen

Visually, the ID. Cross Concept signals Volkswagen’s evolving approach to electric vehicle design. The front of the car adopts a more approachable and “friendly” look compared to conventional SUVs. It features narrow LED headlights connected by a slim light bar, a smile-like front grille, and smooth surfaces that reflect a minimalist, futuristic style. Volkswagen also integrates heritage elements into the design, with louvered rear windows recalling the iconic Volkswagen Microbus, evoking a sense of nostalgia while signaling forward-thinking design choices. The compact dimensions measuring 4,161 mm in length, 1,839 mm in width, and 1,588 mm in height; position the ID. Cross squarely in the small SUV category. The vehicle rides on 21-inch wheels, giving it a sturdy yet sleek stance.

Inside, the ID. Cross Concept emphasizes practicality without sacrificing comfort. Volkswagen introduces soft-touch, fabric-covered surfaces in a light beige tone, described as “Vanilla Chai,” which creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. The seats are upholstered in a yoga mat-like material, designed to offer comfort and flexibility. Impressively, the rear seats fold completely flat, allowing for a continuous surface that supports car camping or transporting bulkier items. Volkswagen has responded to earlier criticisms of excessive digital controls by incorporating physical, tactile buttons on the steering wheel and center console, ensuring an intuitive user experience. The storage solutions are thoughtfully designed as well. The ID. Cross Concept provides a 450-liter rear trunk and an additional 25-liter front trunk (frunk), offering ample space for luggage and groceries. Furthermore, the vehicle can tow up to 165 pounds, enough to carry two e-bikes, underlining its versatility for active lifestyles.

The electric concept marks a significant step in its broader strategy to expand affordable electric mobility. As global competition in the EV market intensifies, especially from Chinese automakers offering budget-friendly models, the ID. Cross aims to meet the demand for practical, well-priced electric SUVs. By blending modern design, reasonable performance specs, and functional features, VW hopes the ID. Cross will attract a wide audience looking to transition to electric driving without sacrificing the utility of a conventional SUV.
